This time, we thought we might tackle a few questions that occasionally get asked about our food and business. Chrissy cooks for me is quite a unique business and we don’t always find it the easiest thing to define, so hopefully this will go some way towards that 😉. We’ll probably be doing a few more of these so just let us know if you have any burning questions of your own! Also - our next workshop on diet & nutrition is imminent and quite relevant to those of you with an interest in our food...
Workshop 2: Diet & Nutrition
The next in our series of workshops covering the four pillars of health is imminent and will be especially interesting for all those with an interest in our food. It covers Diet & Nutrition - or rather, it touches on as much as we possibly can in a 2 hour workshop! We are hoping to do more diet & nutrition specific workshops in the new year so if you have any topics that are of particular interest to you, just let us know!
The workshop takes place on Saturday 17th August at Peace By The Sea (81a Northwood Road, Whitstable, Kent) from 2pm - 4pm. We'll be providing tea and coffee as well as some healthy snacks you'll find right here on chrissy cooks for me! A few other popular menu items may also be cropping up during the workshop...
So, if you fancy some light refreshments with a side of nutritional advice amongst a small group of like-minded people - come find us next Saturday! You can RSVP and find more information on the workshop here at our sister site Salvatori Wellness.
And now for some chrissy cooks for me FAQ's!
FAQ's
Why is your food frozen?
Whilst there are a few reasons for this, it really can be boiled down to convenience - for us and our customers. Frozen food has a longer shelf-life after all which allows us to batch cook our recipes and allows our customers to stock up on food without the pressure of having to gobble it all up within a few days! That said, we are only a very small business operating out of Chrissy’s kitchen so our batches are only so big as can fit in the standing freezer!
Do you deliver or is it collection only?
We are both keen walkers, so if you are local to the Whitstable area and flexible with the delivery time we would be happy to be a good neighbour and drop your food round on one of our walks - just call us to discuss! We're also sometimes in various areas nearby (Canterbury, Faversham, and Aylesham to name a few) and would be happy to meet you with our food should schedules permit!
I liked this product, where has it gone?
Well, this one has a very practical answer. We love all the food we make and offer to our customers, but sadly as we mentioned above, we only have so much freezer space! Since this necessarily limits our menu size a little, we decided to offer seasonal specials that you’ll find pop up regularly throughout the year. This allows us to share many more of our favourite dishes and snacks with you all, without the slight inconvenience of turning Chrissy’s dining room into a walk-in freezer 😁
I’m a diabetic, can I/should I eat your food?
You would need to decide this under the advice of your health practitioner. From our own experience, our mother is a diabetic (in remission!) and we have managed to reverse her use of medications and insulin whilst eating our foods (treats are, as always, in moderation!). Where we use sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup we use smaller amounts, and most of our dishes involve nuts which are a good source of healthy fats and protein which helps lower the GI of a food item. You’re very welcome to call or email us to discuss specific items if you require more details on carbohydrate and sugar content. See last months blog post where we talk specifically about diabetes for more info.
Is your food healthier than a ready meal I could buy in the grocery store?
The problem is that most of those ready meals tend to be high in salt, fat and preservatives as well as often lacking in nutrients. Many ready meals can even be classed as the dreaded ‘ultra-processed foods’ (look out for an upcoming blog post on this!). All our meals are made from scratch and are packed full of nutrients. We are truly passionate about nutrition, having had first hand experience in just how vital it is in promoting and maintaining our health. Our approach is based on using the most nutritious ingredients we can without sacrificing taste, and making sure that every calorie counts. We don’t promote calorie-counting diets, restricting how much you eat of healthy foods, or focusing on numbers. We are all about eating in a healthy and sustainable way that nourishes the body. For more detail on how we view our food, including the ingredients we embrace and the ones we avoid, check out our nutrition page.
Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions of your own (or check out the FAQ's page on our site)! And don't forget our workshop on Saturday 17th!
